We are looking at as many opportunities as possible to make it clear to the government that Canadians want a change!
The NDP’s MP for Vancouver East, Jenny Kwan, is hosting a community town hall to discuss electoral reform. Let’s make sure our voices are heard!
Here is the invitation from Ms Kwan’s office.

Good afternoon:

New Democrat MPs are pushing the Liberal government to deliver on their promise to make the 2015 election the last one under our unfair, winner-takes-all voting system. I’m writing to you today about this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to change our broken electoral system.

I hope you can join me and special guests Dr. Cameron Maxwell (Political Science Professor & Director of UBC’s Centre for the Study of Democratic Institutions) and Jana Rayne MacDonald (VP, Fair Vote Vancouver) at a community town hall I’m hosting to listen to the views of my constituents. This unique opportunity will be a chance to engage and share how you want to see our voting system transformed.

Saturday, September 24 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Canuck Family Education Centre (2nd floor of the Eastside Family Place)

1655 William St (map)

RSVP at or by calling (604) 775-5800

Our electoral system has been with us since before Confederation. That’s before we drove cars, before penicillin was developed, and even before lightbulbs lit our rooms. It’s called: ‘first-past-the-post’—a reference to horseracing where the first horse to reach the post wins. But in a diverse multi-party democracy like we have in Canada, that means most candidates can get elected even when two-thirds of voters have supported someone else.

This outdated, winner-takes-all system gave Stephen Harper—and now the Liberals—100% of the power in Ottawa with just 39% of the vote. As a result, millions of votes effectively don’t count, disenfranchising voters who believe their voices aren’t heard.

I believe it’s time for a modern voting system—one that reflects a diverse and inclusive modern Canada. A system where every vote counts, no matter which party you voted for. Like New Democrats in the last election, the Liberals have also promised change, but it’s up to all of us to make sure that this change doesn’t make an unfair system even worse.

I hope you can attend this event on September 24. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to influence the modernization of our voting system and we need your voice. If you are unable to attend this town hall, I still want to hear your voice: simply visit or write to me.

With thanks,

Jenny Kwan

Member of Parliament for Vancouver East
